Quality of western Canadian lentils 2017

5. Protein content

Protein content for green and red lentils in 2017 ranged from 22.3% to 29.4% (Table 2). The mean protein content was 25.6%, which was lower than the mean for 2016 (27.1%), and lower than the 10-year mean of 27.1% (Figure 2). Lower protein content in 2017 may be due to the dry growing conditions. Table 3 represents the mean protein content for green and red lentils by crop region (Figure 3).

Each point represents the average protein content of lentils in that crop year. A solid line connects the points, showing the variation of the average protein contents from 2007 through 2017. The dashed line represents the mean protein content of lentils (27.1%) over a 10-year period from 2007 to 2016. Average protein contents from 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2016 (27.6%, 27.9%, 27.1%, 28.0 and 27.1%, respectively) were all above or equal to the 10-year average of 27.1%, while those from 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2015 (26.8%, 26.7%, 26.5%, 27.0% and 25.9%, respectively) were below the 10-year average.
