Grain weighing services

The Canadian Grain Commission monitors official weighing of grain for exports of Canadian grain. Weighing services are also available for grain not being exported. There are fees for all weighing services.

Official weighing

All grain being discharged from Canadian terminal elevators, for export, must be officially weighed. This is required by the Canada Grain Act. Shipments to the United States are exempt from this requirement. The Canadian Grain Commission is responsible for monitoring official weighing.

The terminal elevator operator must present the Canadian Grain Commission representative onsite at the elevator or nearest regional office or service centre with notification and a loading order for the shipment.

As the conveyance loads, the terminal will maintain records of the weighing processes. The terminal elevator will submit these records to the Canadian Grain Commission, which reviews the submitted weight records and certifies to the official weight of the shipment.

The Canadian Grain Commission issues a Certificate Final for each shipment attesting to the quality and weight of the shipment.

Optional weighing services

Optional weighing services can also be requested for grain being delivered domestically or exported to the United States. To request this service, contact the nearest Canadian Grain Commission regional office.
