Intellectual Property Policy Summary

The Canadian Grain Commission generates, uses and contributes to the development of intellectual property assets in a broad range of circumstances, including but not limited to our scientific research activities.

Our Intellectual Property Policy formalizes requirements for the management of intellectual property from conception through deployment. The Intellectual Property Policy facilitates informed and consistent decision making for the identification, protection and management of intellectual property with the goal of maximizing benefits for Canadians.

Generally, intellectual property developed or conceived by Canadian Grain Commission employees while acting within the scope of their duties or employment, or intellectual property made with facilities, equipment or financial aid provided by or on behalf of the Canadian Grain Commission, is owned by the Crown.

Under the Intellectual Property Policy, prior to initiating a research project or collaborating with an outside organization, consideration and proper documentation of any existing or potential intellectual property is required to protect the Crown’s interests. Protecting intellectual property is a key element to facilitate successful technology commercialization and transfer.

All of our employees as well as non-employees, such as students, visiting scientists and collaborators, using Canadian Grain Commission resources have a responsibility to ensure appropriate steps are taken to protect intellectual property assets.
