New standard samples for assessing mildew and frost/heat stress in wheat - Revised

As part of its grain grading modernization project, the Canadian Grain Commission initiated a review of the standard samples used for visual assessment of frost/heat stress and mildew in all classes of wheat. New research conducted by the Canadian Grain Commission has proven that these grading factors do not have a compounding negative effect on the end-use functionality of wheat and should be individually assessed to prevent unnecessary downgrading of wheat.

The CGC presented this information to the Western and Eastern Standards Committees who recommended the following changes:

  • The Western Standards Committee recommended that the standard samples for wheat, which have a combination of mildew and frost/heat stress, be repealed and the mildew and frost/heat stress guide samples, which are currently in place, be approved as the new mildew standard and frost/heat stress standard samples as of August 1, 2018. As of this date, mildew and frost/heat stress will be evaluated individually using the applicable standard samples.
  • Eastern Standards Committee recommended renaming the current mildew guides as mildew standards as of July 1, 2018.

Standard samples for 2018-2019 Crop Year

Western wheat classes

The Canadian Grain Commission approves the use of the following standard samples for the 2018-2019 crop year:

A version of this table published on June 6, 2018, indicated the applicable frost/heat stress standards as 2015 No. 2 CWRS and 2011 No. 3 CWRS.
Effective November 26, 2018, the 2018 No. 2 CWRS and 2018 No. 3 CWRS will replace the previous frost/heat stress standards.
The table has been revised.

Further review and adjustments

As part of the review of standard samples, the Canadian Grain Commission’s Grain Research Laboratory will continue to look at the composition of the mildew and frost/heat stress standards in relation to the impact of mildew and frost/heat stress on end-use functionality. Based on this research, the Canadian Grain Commission may further adjust standard samples to ensure they are accurate, relevant and objective tools.
