Microbiology
Microbiology Laboratory staff study and document many of the species of seedborne fungi associated with Canadian grains in field and storage, specializing in Fusarium species. Since 1983, they have worked to assemble a database on Canadian seedborne fungi.
Fungi growing from grain after incubation.
Research
- Examines samples collected annually through the Harvest Sample program
- Maps the frequency and distribution of fungal species in Canadian grain
- Supports the grain grading system by studying the effects of fungi on grain
- Tests for most seedborne fungal pathogens and saprophytes on grain
- Cultures fungi on media to produce mycotoxins for research
- Identifies fungal causes of grain abnormalities
Whole seed plating onto agar.
Technology and methods
- For identification testing uses:
- whole seed plating and dilution plating on agar
- DNA-based methodology
- Seeks to use the most effective methods for the fungi in question
